Fire Safety

Fire
safety begins with prevention. Here are some tips to stay prepared:

  • Install working smoke detector near all bedrooms and on each level of your home and test them monthly.
  • Change smoke detector batteries once a year
  • Children are deep sleepers. Parents should make sure children know the sound of the smoke alarm and will wake to it
  • Make an escape plan with at least two routes and have practice fire drills in your home.
  • Have a designated meeting place outside your home.
  • Never leave  the kitchen while food is cooking
  • Only adults should use candles and they should never be left unattended or near children, pets, or objects that can catch on fire.
  • Leave at least three feet of space between a space heater and anything flammable
  • Empty ash trays often

If a fire does occur remember the following tips:

  • If there is smoke crouch or crawl to the exit
  • Do not stop for valuables or pets. Fire spreads very quickly!

Disaster Preparedness

Disaster can strike at any time so it is important to be prepared. Use the following checklist to help stay prepared.

Disaster Supply Kit Check List

Remember in the event of an emergency or disaster communication is extremely important so be prepared in advance.

  • Choose an out-of-area relative or friend as an emergency contact that the whole family knows to check in with in case of emergency.
  •  If you have a cell phone you may want to store an emergency contact number under the acronym ICE (In Case of Emergency). Not only will you be able to find the number in an emergency situation but if you are unable to place a call yourself someone else can reach your emergency contact for you.

It is also important to have your medical information handy in case of an emergency or disaster. Keep current list of your medications and pertinent medical information in your wallet and another in your house. The Vial of Life program offers free medical forms and recommends you place a copy of your medical information in a plastic resealable bag on the front of the refrigerator.  More information and blank medical forms can be found at vialoflife.com. You may also want to place a copy of your medical information in the freezer in an empty medicine bottle.

CPR Training

CPR saves lives! In the past, many people have avoided CPR because of the fear of having to provide rescue breathing but now the American Heart Association has introduced hands only CPR. If you would like to learn more about hands only CPR or find a training location visit the American Heart Association web site.
